The City of San Mateo is structured as a council-manager form of government, which means that the City Manager is the chief executive officer of the City.
The City Manager is appointed by the City Council and is responsible for the overall management of City operations and departments. The City Manager works in close partnership with the Mayor and City Council, who are responsible for setting the policy direction of the City.
With a population of over 90,000, employees work to provide a diverse range of high quality services throughout the community. These services range from public safety including Police and Fire, to Library and Recreation services.
The services provided by the City are grounded in a foundation of fiscal responsibility, environmental stewardship, and data-driven decision making. The City organization is committed to providing quality customer service and focusing on both the immediate and long-term goals of San Mateo.
